College Advising
Annapolis Christian Academy’s guidance office provides a variety of services to high school students to help them successfully transition from high school to college. Staff collaborates with students to support their self-evaluation and to help identify student gifts, goals and interests for higher education. Students are encouraged to make thoughtful choices during this complex and stressful process.
Before a student is accepted into a college, a lot of work must be done. Our guidance staff is committed to partnering with parents and students to help steer through the maze of college preparations.
• Strategic college planning begins in the 9th grade, when the guidance staff begin a dialogue with students about their futures. Students are encouraged to develop a vision for the future and the means necessary to reach that goal. Students are encouraged to think about the characteristics of the college they might like to attend (i.e. large, small, liberal arts, program specialties, trade opportunities, etc.). They are also informed of the implications of laziness, procrastination, and lack of attention to their studies, and the negative impact that could have on their chances of getting into the college of their choice. Students are encouraged to become self-aware and self-motivated to make the most of high school academic and extracurricular programs.
• Throughout their high school years, students are instructed to develop a resume by keeping a diary of all sporting, musical, church, civic, scouting, and volunteer activities. In addition to their academic transcript, students can distinguish themselves by their record of community service and community involvement.
• As Sophomores, students take the PSAT as part of ACA’s academic testing program. At this time students are assisted in setting reasonable goals for future testing and are encouraged to begin a systematic process of SAT preparation (including taking an SAT prep class).
• Students take the SAT in the spring of their junior year and again the fall of their senior year. In the fall of their senior year, they are directed to fill out and submit all college applications before December 1st. In the spring of the senior year, students are directed to file for grants, loans, and scholarships.
